Open the polls!

By | April 12, 2010

I had some hilarious thing planned where we got lookilikeys of various leading politicians to give their ideas of what they thought the actual leaders would pick for this (such as David Cameron Lookilikey going “well, I know it’s not eleigible yet but I would vote for the upcoming Scream If You Know the Answer! as the best show of all time, because it’s hosted by Duncan James who was in Blue – much like us!” and Alex Salmond Lookilikey choosing “Paul Coia,” as his favourite host, “because he’s Scottish.”) but decided I couldn’t be bothered.

So now it’s time to let your digits do the talking.

I’ll get round to listening to Double Cross tomorrow.

Whoever coded the tournament connecting walls on the BBC website should have made sure that you shouldnt be able to retake a wall just by refreshing the page.

I believe its connected to BBC ID’s so could be that you can resit but not count for leaderboard more than once

I recognise one of those walls… though it docked me three points for not using the exact phrase it wanted for one of the connections. Three points! And I wasn’t even wrong! Robbed…

Er, the tournament walls should be all minty-fresh. Please email/Facebook me to let me know what wall you’re having problems with and what the answer you entered was. Thanks.

No need to panic – I think I’m literally the only person who will have recognised that wall. Though I think there was an oystercatcher on it before…

But I am still concerned about the docked 3 points. The program should be as generous as possible so if that’s happened then there must be a keyword you’ve thought of that I haven’t.

I also just lost 3 points on wall 5 when my answer probably should have given me points. I’ve emailled you the details

Double Cross is good. The format is straightforward (although the scoring is kinda confusing the first time you hear it), and it’s quite fun to listen to (good banter between contestants, but that might be because two of them were engaged). My only concern is that the questions did seem somewhat easy in the multiple choice format. When I first heard the description of the show, I was expecting answers to be open-ended, which could allow for some really clever or crazy bluffs (er, crosses), but having choices narrowed things down a bit too precisely (to four things, to be exact). Then again, I can see the problems that would arise when someone gives a near-correct answer and someone accepts/denies an answer, I’m sure it’d be a judging nightmare. Still, it’s overall very good. I wonder if it’s too late to get in on it (possibly a future series, as the first one’s likely been completely taped already)?

You picked up on my issue, the scoring. Trust me I know the confusion part and understand it. If and when we get to series two it’s being changed a bit to not be as confusing. I fully understand that issue and it’s being worked on. I’d change it now if it wasn’t for the tournament format.

We decided on multiple choice because if we have open ended questions and no one has a clue on the category, you’re going to sit through a half hour of “Uhs” which makes for miserable viewing. And also I’m pitching this show as a TV project eventually and it’ll be multiple choice if it gets there (it’s almost bound to be in America where I’m kinda forced to pitch for the time being) so it saves us effort. This first episode wasn’t the greatest example of the bluffing aspect, but it was flat out the more enjoyable of the two episodes we’ve taped thus far. Episode two has far more bluffing and better game play. This one was just funnier and more entertaining.

Actually the first series hasn’t been fully taped. QuizQuizQuiz gave me the first two episodes of material, so we’ve only taped two to see if it works. It’s working, so we’re moving on from there. Anyone can feel free to apply. Odds are you’ll be there for season two but if we need quick substitutes you could be in it.

I know it’s not the greatest thing on earth and there are issues we are ironing out for series two, but overall I’m happy. In the first day we peaked at the 24th most popular Gaming podcast in all of iTunes and the number one most popular podcast in the subdivision they force people into (in our case Other Games), so at least to me it’s been a success. I’m looking at a few minor rule changes for series two and hopefully we’ll get to that soon. This was a complete gamble and I had no idea if this would work at all, so overall I’m happy with it and can’t wait to grow exponentially next series.

And as always if you think it sucks feel free to rip me to pieces because I want to make this really good.

Sorry, it’s apparently neurotic commenting time.

*Part of the scoring issue is I never explained it correctly because I tend to babble on and on as you’re aware if you read my writing. For episode 2 there’s a much clearer explanation.

*I’ve got a better mic coming in for episode three so it’s clearer

So I think I’ve got no more psychotic rambling but if you’ve got any

I’ve just listened to Round 1 on the way to work:

        1) It’s impressive that you’ve got New Order to reform to do your theme music.

        2) Yes the scoring… could do with a graphic. Also, have I missed a nuance, but if Competitor A answers the question and Competitor B thinks it’s a ‘cross’, it seems to me like Competitor C doesn’t get a look-in, so how can you “double cross”?

        3) I agree with Art about the multiple choice aspect, would a possible solution be to have a fifth “something else” answer?

Otherwise yeah, it’s OK so far. You’re quite a good host, I’ll listen to Round two later.

Right, heard the rest now, the format doesn’t do too much for me personally (it’s basically Hollywood Squares without the noughts and cros… actually just the noughts element), but it’s basically solid. I don’t think you will have much luck getting it on television (gentle panel games played for reals haven’t been ‘in’ for a while, and I’m not sure what visuals would add to the game), but as a radio show it works quite well – the pacing feels about right, there’s very little dead air, it’s fine.

The Quiz Quiz Quiz advert makes me laugh.

          Good luck with it.

Well, “breaking” a news story in the sense of mentioning something that The Telegraph already broke (The Telegraph! Since when did that break game show stories?). Anyway: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/7582211/Give-Us-a-Clue-set-to-return-after-13-years.html

The Treasure Tag story is because Cat’s been promoting the show at MIPTV and inevitably there’s been an accompanying press release: http://www.virtualpressoffice.com/publicsiteContentFileAccess?fileContentId=279467&fromOtherPageToDisableHistory=Y&menuName=Home&sId=&sInfo=
