Monday is VERY EXCITING this week, what with the Only Connect grand final and the launch party of the Gameshow General Election Poll (we’ve got some very special guests lined up for that) (we haven’t really) which will open on Monday night, following the dissolving of Parliament earlier in the day.
We’ve worked out a difficult and alienating voting system to really make sure only the shows and hosts I quite like count.
Not really of course, we’re extending the political theme with the Eurovision scoring system (because it’s got ‘political voting’ – do you see?), so you’ve got three-and-a-half weeks to come up with a reason why you think Anthea Turner (say) justifies your 12 points. Actually you won’t have to give reasons if you don’t want to, but any you do give may well go on the final report. And if you did want to give Anthea Turner (say) 12 points, there’s nothing I could do to stop you.
You subtly trying to get people to vote for Anthea Turner, Brig?
I can think of 12 very good reasons to vote for Anthea Turner (say).
Once the voting is over, Brig, I think we’d all look forward to hearing your 12 reasons…
NBC just picked up a pilot for an ITV Studios game show Secret Treasure. It’s described as…
“pits six contestants against one another as they answer trivia questions and attempt to steal and reveal each other’s cash-filled “secret treasure boxes.””
Has ITV done a pilot for this in England? I don’t recall hearing about this one.
No – very strange, there’s a lottery show format called Secret Fortune floating about, but that sounds a bit like Deal or No Deal more than anything else. This sounds a bit like Canadian format Trading Up (Paquet Voleur, in its native Quebecoise).
I can’t say it sounds brilliant from that little snippet of information given, but I live in hope.
Richard Osman missed something on the final round of Pointless just then. When the winning pair offered “Home” as an East 17 hit, Richard assumed they were thinking of a hit of that title by someone else, but more likely they were thinking of “Around The World”, which was one of the pointless answers.
Great Only Connect final, although I would have felt a little bit short changed if the Strategists made up such a massive deficit in the final round.
Also, a bit surprised that in the Canterbury Tales music question, the written clues were the songs rather the artists which was where the element lies.
Chris Cummins is a bit fast on the buzzer, isn’t he? Fantastic game and a great show; well done to everyone involved.
What you both said.
The final is very neatly timed to give Only Connect a run in the Game Show General Election, too; browsing through recent UKGS Polls of the Year and Weeks of the Year, I have a suspicion that OC is probably actually the only new show since the last poll in 2006 to make it to my all-time top ten. (An honourable nod to Crisis Control, though featuring both it and Scavengers would be too self-indulgent even for me.) This probably says more about me than it does about the shows.
Mostly I just like saying “Chatsworthative Party”.
Mmm, I quite like the zeitgeist element of the polls – Deal or No Deal was 2006’s lucky recipient of perfect timing, it will be interesting to see how that does this time round.
Especially with the mathimatical phrases. Countdown champion for you.
And a gambling question for The Gamblers (again). Just saying like….
Just saying like….
…they weren’t given the question on their plate but chose it at random from a few others.
Actually it was a question about dice that fell the way of people who play board games, so you could argue it either way. The reason that it was in the final was because it was very tough, and nothing else.
I’d have stood a chance of getting it if it was written in the way I usually think about odds (that is 1/36) rather than the way bookies write odds (1/35)
The Gamblers said afterwards they were deliberately keeping quiet to avoid making mistakes and losing points.
It’s lucky they didn’t totally. If they hadn’t got the 2 they got, and Chris got them then they would have lost
I’m not so sure I would have felt that, as it was they managed to make what looked like it was going to be a whitewash and disappointing final into something a bit exciting.
Ratings Bear, grrm has got some early Divided ratings. For the first four shows last week it failed to win the slot but actually came FOURTH in the 5pm slot. Tuesday got 1.2 million with Wednesday to Friday sticking at 1 million, losing to Och Aye Weakest Link, Coach Trip, Come Dine With Me and Let’s Not Buy a House in the Country. Divded even got less viewers than Pointless who did very well with 1.4 million against Deal or No Deal.
At the risk of muscling in on your territory, Mr. Staring Bear (anag.), I have looked up the latest for Only Connect.
BONG! In good news news, ratings have grown and grown and the last two shows for which ratings have been published both attained more than half a million viewers. Hurrah!
BONG! In bad news news, the position in the BBC 4 weekly charts has fallen to second and fourth, in the light of the channel broadcasting, well, even more popular shows. Boo!
Four. Hundred. And. Forty. Four. Pounds.
BONG!
No University Challenge lead-in. i remember from previous discussions that has a big impact on OC ratings
Given what they cost, their one-off dramas/docs OUGHT to be beating us, or there’s something very wrong. It’s very pleasing we’re punching over 500k regularly now, giving us a 400k+ average over the series.
That’s a shame as I’d have said that Divided can stand on its own (three) feet easily.
Yesterday’s Divided has now dropped below the seven figure level and managed to obtain only 900,000 viewers (9%). Weakest Link got 1.9 million (14%). The way this is going, Ratings Bear will be tucking into some Andrew Castlepie over the May Day weekend.
Oh, how I would giggle if ITV 1’s Divided fell below BBC 4’s Only Connect.
Mmm, pie.
