In what’s looking like a greatly exciting Summer with the return of The Crystal Maze, the granddaddy of the genre, Fort Boyard, returns for its 28th series in France and ten more teams of celebs arrive at the fort with the aim of prising Pere Fouras’ treasure from his hands.
This year sounds like a continuation of last year’s structure, likely retaining the board game theming, but with new touches here and there. Of note: adventures are governed by red clepsydres this year and it sounds like the prisons and Blanche’s Hall of Judgement are getting makeovers not unlike the Council got last year.
Six new cells and 20 new games promised, there’s a new Lady Boo and a new professor in the Boyard Academy, Eric Lampaert who’s a British comic and French film star (although I must say I hadn’t heard of him before this) alongside Francis Lalanne.

I missed the first twenty minutes, so let’s recap the hilarious fails:
* Samuel Ettienne doing his best “where’s the key” on Percolator, and then almost getting locked in.
* Loup hysterically throwing the flare in the barrel then swimming off having forgotten to light it.
* The worst playing of noughts and crosses ever.
Fun episode in general, but this really feels like a B year production wise – not much of the new stuff has really hit.
Also I’m always find it a bit suspect when you see a wide shot of the clock running out, then about half a minute of them shouting for them to get out later the contestant comes out and they’ve mysteriously cropped the clock out of the shot or added the lovely close-up in post. Both percolator and lutte smelt like lock-ins to me, perhaps they didn’t want four judgement games. Don’t be scared of your main point of jeopardy for goodness sakes!
It’s not the first time I’ve felt the show has been taking liberties with taking prisoners, although it’s been many years since I’ve noticed it this badly. I’m not even sure what there is to be gained from doing it. Still though.
Biggest surprise for me was discovering Vincent Mc doom is male and also played cylinders.
Kinda agree with the Lutte lockin (Although every playing on lutte should really be a lock in)
Overall its Mid series so the epeiodes are the mediocre ones. Week 7 has already aired in Belgium. There is also a possibility one episode may be moved due to rugby.
“Overall its Mid series so the episodes are the mediocre ones.” – Yeah. This was sort of a meh one. The way it was going I was almost hoping for a loss to redeem it.
Hanging Masts is a pretty cool idea, and gives Lady Boo her own ‘floor duel’. Kind of a shame she’s *too* good at it. And they showed that she’s that good at it. Kinda feels like any suspense from future playings is kinda gone now.
Speaking of, she’s geared up for Boyardodrome in next week’s preview. Do they do a duel version of this? That would actually make a LOT more sense considering the setup of the game.
Oh interesting. I expect it’s set up as a duel game in mind for the versions of the show that film with two teams, it certainly would make more sense that way.
Have to agree with the comments on Lady Boo. I do think shes a little too good.
In terms of the Boyardodrome it could just be her have been training in there and just coming out. But one can hope its a duel.
I also believe Sweden remains the only Duel version.

Interesting… Also, at least according to fb.fr it might have been the first filming of the game. Maybe it just didn’t work as a duel somehow, hence the switch? (Should we call another easy win for Lady Boo now? :P)

In terms of fails, if I translated the question right I think getting “True or false: A mouse is a female rat” wrong is up there. Although to be fair, I’m not accounting for the stress of the situation in Spa!

I amazed they haven’t run out of questions about mice/snakes/frogs yet.
That percolator game was something – from having the game won in 30 seconds to “nearly” getting locked in (and not getting the key).
We talk about games that adapt to the player – I didn’t realise the wheel could spin that fast! He must have been pretty dizzy given how many rotations occurred (at the end) before it spat him out into the entrance.
Next week’s episode depends on the Rugby result. So there may not be an episode.
Looks like the episode is on after all now. Guessing France lost?

Really… interesting change to the rules of Boyardodrome. Or, well, as per what we assumed last week, interesting that they changed it FROM this.
I thought the whole point of the red clepsydre was that you can’t leave the game without the clue! They should have had 3 prisoners.
Before the mummy game, the voice from the off said the candidate can end up as prisoner, but in one of the recent episodes, the person failed the game and was still able to rejoin the team. The rules seem to change from one week to the next these days.
I thought the Restaurant was disappointing as well, they hardly ate anything and still got the clue.
It was still an entertaining episode in my opinion, but it could have been so much better if they sticked to their own rules.
I don’t think any of us really knew what the red clepsydre were for. I guess if you stay in past the timer you become prisoner.
In terms of the episode. Boyardodrome (le duel) is kinda disappointing and i don’t prefer that version.
They made the cafe game easier by giving a bigger scoop.

Cage Immegee seems alot easier as a clue canister just with alot less time.
Sweden is back again. New guy in the watch tower called Wolf. Interestingly Both teams get a individual chance at a key and compete for the clue.
They also used the whole prison escape (Including the cell) as a normal key game.
Still wish they went back to there duel format first to 7 keys moves onto clues.
Duel Boyardodrome is this year’s answer to “what’s FB borrowed this year?” question, this time from The Almost Impossible Gameshow.

I *love* me a rubbish team, which is so much more entertaining than an OK one, I start to actively root for them to do badly just to see how bad it can get. My favourite teams are the ones that technically win, but do so badly they have to top it up to make the minimum.
This team delivered apart from somehow managing to get four clues and €8,000 at the end, so well done. Although I was hoping for another prisoner in the Abandoned Library, just because you have to go back years and years to the last time a team had three prisoners.
Two points of interest:
* I thought it was quite funny how Blanche didn’t seem to have her snake the week “what’s Blanche’s pet” came up as a competition question, like this made it more difficult.
* What IS the point of the blindfold for Velo? The game is three years old, they see what happens in the film in the Hall of Adventures, what’s the surprise?
It’s kinda funny, if they hadn’t horribly botched the escape, they seemed like they would’ve actually gotten quite a bit. Seemed to use the best collection strategy.
Deroule-Boulet is kinda rubbish. It’s an interesting idea, but the actual game just doesn’t seem that interesting. And climbing back up kinda kills the climax of the game being the fall.
Watching it on replay, I find lately I’ve really been skipping a lot of the show. Is it just me or is there a LOT of filler this year?
Agree with you about the filler- if last year I made a point of watching it live every week, this year I’ve watched everything since the first episode on catch-up and found myself fast forwarding through a lot until we get to the Council and Treasure Room.
Previously there was a pattern to the series- odd numbered years introduced big changes to the game or presentation and felt like the show got a kick up the backside, while even years basically built on the previous years success and felt like they were coasting and less exciting as a result. That got shaken up lately- the last major addition we had was the introduction of La Cage in 2015, last year’s series didn’t change anything major (apart from the theme tune and graphics) but was still excellent. As a result we’re now in the third year where nothing major has changed, and this is definitely a “coasting” year.
Mmm, I know there have been several times where I’ve joined the show late this year and not been too bothered about it which is certainly unusual.
Given how few people complete cylindres, it seemed odd that they added the lock-in countdown (in post-editing) for a game that was completed in 70 seconds – as shown immediately afterwards by the half-full timer.
For a team performing so badly to that point, I’m a little surprised they went that route when it was actually an excellent performance!
I think the only games we have yet to see this year is Museum, Excalibur and Snakes.
Was Cablocypede cut again? It randomly came back last year after a bit of time off.
Haven’t seen Stand de Tir yet. Not that anyone misses it. 😛 And if you wanna get technical (and at The Bar, isn’t that what we’re here for?) they haven’t done the Lutte variation with M. Boo and the box.
It’s a shame. Museum is one of my favourites. I like the old style games where you have to “work” your way back to the exit. Much more entertaining than things like Ski or Rodeo Dino IMO.

That was a weird one. Win Cylindres, win Velo, flap on Ski and Academy, fail completely on Willy, split Judgement 2-2, bugger up the cage and the escape and the duels, and you still end up with enough indices to nail the code without a sacrifice but no time for anything other than a single grab. I’d like to say “rubbish team” but it was really a team that nailed all the hard challenges and couldn’t manage any of the relatively straightforward ones. I mean, seriously, you went on Fort Boyard and you couldn’t cope with vermin? Um. And they rattled through the first half as well in terms of editing.
Czech Boyard returns this Saturday. Including a return of the Caterpillar game.
Interesting… gotta wonder how many old games there lying about that are ready to go if needed. I mean, going back to that other thread, Cablocypede came back randomly last year after a few years off in the French version. At least from that clip you posted, looks like Sweden’s still doing Entrainement sous-marin…

French Boyard
Shame about the spoiler pictures that showed Tex becoming a prisoner. Kinda ruins the show if you know someone who you like won’t be doing half of it.
Still not had museum or Excaibur (Tho the last episode could have both).
Czech is back with its version. Its 1 Team and the team has to collect 5 keys in 50 minutes. After that they get 3 Clue games (The riddle is replaced by a council game)
Czech also don’t edit down there games. Which i actually enjoy.
Also good to see old games like Caterpillar used again (With the actual music).
Passe Partout is back this year (After his absent in foreign countries last year due to an injury although he appeared in Morocco limping around the fort after the team).
Passe Muraille is now bringing the host scrolls of what game is next and doing some costumes and sketches.
Overall i actually really enjoy the Czech version. It plays true to the standard format. The only downside is they talk alot more in between games.
Excalibur will definitely come up next week, it was in the preview. But even if they’re going to have both Museum and Excalibur next ep, I’m still hugely dissappointed they only played them once this year. I guess they might be dropped next season?

Not being played doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll get dropped if it’s still used elsewhere. But I agree it’s annoying when some games are well underplayed, especially when new ones that aren’t very good get well overplayed.
Today I learned Olivier did French Strictly.
Another Foreign version returns today, Slovakia. Pretty solid.
Basically follows the old school format of needing 5 keys in 40 minutes.
Seems to follow the Czech version where they have a council game as the first clue game rather than a riddle.
Passe muraille also is the messenger here and does sketches as well.
They do have a male and female host who both stay with the team at all times and both seem to support the team. The music package is also questionable at time. I think they have used the 2012 “New Year Running theme” as well as Train Phantom music in Casino.
Czech Boyard are looking for Civilians for a new series next year.

Interestingly I think part of the reason it was fun is because it didn’t really have that much 2017 stuff in it – Rodeo Dino, Surf, that’s about it, which is a bit of a sad indictment of the season really. The cosmetic stuff continues to be great – I liked the updated prison and Blanche’s room, but the one big rule change this year, the red clepsydres, has been a massive damp squib.
Of this year’s new games, Padded Cell, Zoo, Two Cages and Surf have been the only top tier ones for me (and I remain convinced that the short stunt ones, such as Bike, Surf are better suited as key games and I’d prefer the adventures to be a bit more meaty). TNT is OK as a reversioning of an existing game. Perhaps interestingly the games that are the least slapstick and more skilful on the face of it.
Rodeo-dino isn’t a great game and not as funny as I can believe it looked on paper. Ski’s OK but feels like it ought to be in a slightly longer room. Boyardodrome is simultaneously too simple (against the clock) or too difficult (as a duel), Suspended Masts too difficult, Rotary-Ball, meh. The council genuinely had noughts and crosses and played badly to boot. Come on. Spa I can take or leave, surely they’ve run of questions you can ask about mice/frogs/snakes by now.
Eric was OK. Not sure where you take him next year. Narcisse remains an excellent character, even if most of his games are repeats now.
This felt like the first time in years I felt myself getting bored watching, like I spent half the episode with it as background entertainment whilst doing something else. I wish it wasn’t the best part of 150 minutes long.
I don’t think the show needs a shake up, I do think it needs more of an element of surprise.

The Red clepsydres were really a bad addition to the show. Either these need to be changed to they can’t exit without the clue or just taken away.
Also wish there was something the joker could be exchanged for to give the people tempting to use it some motivation to try the game itself. Maybe something like a small bag of Boyards to add to the score at the end.
I am a huge fan of the sketches that happen between the characters as i believe it brings light to the fort. Both Czech and Slovakia are doing there as well which is great.
As for the format i would like to see some changes. I would actually like to see another few key games played to make the chance to get 9 keys more possible (Currently 15 games so they can lose 6 and that includes the cage). 5 Clue game chances is enough.
One big wish would be for them to show the full games rather than these heavily edited games.
Overall a not bad season but can still do with some small tweaks to make it better.
I’d be happy with five clue game chances but only if they drop Willy. But I quite like Willy Rovelli as a character, so perhaps they could give him something else.
I don’t think there’s much chance of this happening though.
I would rather Restaurant go in with Boyard Academy as an either or. Or they could drop the story every episode and just play it the first time you see these characters.
Caught up on the last two eps. Pretty much agreed (as I said on Twitter), it hasn’t been a BAD season, just kinda eh. The thing that kinda kills it for me is it feels really poorly paced. The games get edited to pieces, but there’s extended vignettes for everyone now. Most of them overstaying their welcome after the first time. (Narcisse’s is really bad for this) Heck, surprised the Passes don’t have them at this point.
Speaking of padding, feels like they need to cut a segment *somewhere*. Either the cage, or Blanche, or something. The escape was really nice this year, but also kinda harsh.
Glad we finally got Excalibur and Museum, but can’t believe Fosse didn’t get a single playing. Such a classic game… (And leaves Excalibur as the sole holder of longest continuously-running game on the Fort, since Jarres skipped a year)
Kinda disappointed another year without an outright loss. I mean, yeah, it’s for charity, and a bummer at the end of a show, but the odd loss can still be fun to watch.
So, new games (After seeing them a bunch), the running theme kinda feels like “Good idea in search of a game”. Lots of interesting set-ups, but no interesting game to go with it.
Zoo – I like it, but feels like the type of game they’d replace
TNT – Good reno of a game that’d been getting a bit old
Surf – Eh, it’s alright, but agree it feels more like a key game
Spa – Same with TNT, good reno of an existing game
Ski – Didn’t like it. Nice idea, but just didn’t work.
Rodeo-Dino – I like the idea behind it, but the actual game didn’t work. Maybe just grabbing something? Or just ‘stay on for long enough’?
Mats-Suspendus – Good idea, except Lady Boo is TOO good at it. (And, I mean, she’s a legit pole dancer, so this is just unfair)
Deroule Boulet – A pratfall in search of a game. I’d almost prefer the person try to free themselves somehow, and that initial fall reveals the code.
Deux Cages – A boring game with a plain setup against a guy that sucks at it. Might work in actual Duel formats, but not here.
Asile – Love the set, but the actual game felt weird. I’d almost preferred a mix of this and Laverie, where the goal is just to rotate the room itself. I see this coming back with a new ‘game’.
Boyardodrome – Same as Deux Cages, where it doesn’t quite work as a duel against Lady Boo, felt pointless as a two-person game, but it’d probably be really good in an actual Duel format.
But yeah, hard to say what they’d actually do to improve the show next year with the direction it’s going. Lots of ‘backseat producing’ that can be done, but nothing that feels like where they’re taking it. Personally, what I’d like to see is maybe a shorter main season (7-8 episodes), but film 2 or 3 night episodes again for fall/winter specials again.
I tend to skip through the Eric, Felindra, Blanche & Rouge ones, but the Narcisse one makes me giggle so much that I have to watch it every time.
I’m honestly not sure we *need* the Cage. It always feels like it’s a bit tacked on. They could go back down to seven keys but keep 50 min time limit, Blanche etc and it wouldn’t feel much different.
I was a bit apprehensive when the 2m30 time limit for Grande Evasion this year was announced, but I’m pleasantly surprised just how bad people have been at it. Only perpetual prisoner Olivier Dion managed to really rock it (as I said at the time, two appearances, zero adventures won!)
I think Cellule Capitonée is one of the coolest ones they’ve done for a while, but I’m not sure they’ll keep it the same with the backlash they got early on.

Agree with most of what’s been said, especially about the missing element of surprise. It’s more predictable than ever: You know in the beginning that the gold pieces WILL fall. They’ve made this whole concept change about the Team facing Pere Fouras, and yet the team wins every time. It’s been the second year without a single loss. OK, it’s for charity, but it would make it so much more interesting if the risk of a loss would be higher. Even if we had 2 or 3 losses per season, I think that would make people root for the team much more. Maybe they don’t go that way because it’s probably hard to find new celebs willing to participate, the high number of “repeat offenders” might suggest that.
Another big problem IMO is the obvious effort by the production to keep everything within a certain comfort zone, i.e. never more than 2 prisoners. You can sometimes clearly see Mr./Mrs.Boo and/or the cage gladiators lose on purpose. They should establish a set of rules that covers all scenarios, even extreme ones without the need to interfere.
I first thought it’s a good idea to increase the number of keys to 9, but apparently, that’s now the reason there are hardly any key games with a real risk of a lock-in.
The cinematic sequences: Indeed too long and repetitive, unbearable after a few weeks. They should at least show shorter versions during the second half of the season (especially for Lalanne and the Peter Fouras bit). It’s absurd: The games are edited down and the same fillers drag on week after week.
Passe Mureille’s costumes have been fun, but it’s gone too far.
Meanwhile, the total ratings are in: Better than 2015, but worse than last year.

Oh, yeah, reminded me – Yeah, Passe Mureille’s stuff gotten pretty annoying. The in-between skits are still alright, but a. costume. after. every. single. game.
And is it just me, or were there a LOT less prisoners in the first half than usual? Very few auto-lock-in games, nothing much felt like a danger of being in prison, so this kinda feels like it defeats the whole conceit of Fort Boyard. (What a change from, what, two-three years ago when most of us were complaining there were too MANY auto-lock-ins and cheap prisoners)
They did a great job with the cinematic sequences, but they really need a shorter version for the subsequent outings. It really puzzles me when they cut the actual content to accommodate the pre-recorded stuff – for example, was there a full sketch cut outside Train Fantome with Lalanne (August 26th) given the changes in expression either side of the cut.
I would love to see them be outside the comfort zone – one of the most iconic moments of The Crystal Maze was S04E03 where the team bought someone out, only to get another player locked in (rinse and repeat). The ad-lib for the five seconds in the dome as well as the team attitude of “we’re going to have fun” when they realised they had zero chance of winning really made it a special episode.
It feels like the current model needs a revamp though – both the cage and the council seem to have “forced wins” because teams are performing so badly. Grande Evasion worked fairly well but torpedoed one team to the point they were basically doomed for the treasure room.
We’ve seen in previous seasons having variable targets (e.g. the height of the gate) and nine keys inevitably ends up with an extended judgement segment in the middle. If we really wanted to go crazy with the format – allow the teams to dictate key games and clue games (similar to original TCM) and introduce some more strategy between number of keys, clues, treasure, time, players and so on…
It is incredibly frustrating as a viewer to see a team do exceptionally well up until the council, get nothing, and suddenly they are at a significant disadvantage for the treasure room to a mediocre team that had a good run in the council.

A shame that stuff like Araginee, Ski, and Rodeo Dino were in six episodes, yet classic ones like Museum and Excalibur are one-offs. I mean, understandably they want to feature the new games, but still…

I can get why you might have played Ski a lot, I don’t think it’s all that great but there’s at least something there. Rodeo-Dino is rubbish (note how they’ve edited it down to about 20 seconds every time it’s played) but it’s a big set prop so I get it.
Araginee has had three goes now and has still not come close to being great.
Also isn’t it about time Blanche stopped bothering offering the choice of a game of chance or skill at judgement, given 99% choose skill?

Still think Araginee is *so* close to being a good game, but this year’s took a huge step back. Said it before, but it’d work so well along the lines of that older rat maze (like the initial years, but a longer route). Shorter than the rat course cause of mobility of course, but probably funnier seeing them struggle more.
I don’t think they should be playing to not lose time, they tried that for years and nobody really liked it (also leading to situations where we watched for twenty minutes and our reward for that was five seconds extra/less in the treasure room – not entertaining). I’d certainly be down with combining judgement and council in some capacity (in fact if you were reduced to 90 minute eps I’d make this the first thing to happen) although I fear Production have painted themselves into a corner in having them seperate for so long, Blanche is popular, and building up to a face to face meeting with Pere Fouras at the end of the show is quite dramatically neat.
I think I read a suggestion somewhere that everyone will get released before the end because the Celebs don’t like not getting to do the Treasure Room.
I think this year Araginee is harder but it seems more funnier to the audience to watch them all struggle out.
Maybe they could try a system where any prisoner has 2 minutes to escape and every 30 seconds after they lose one of there 4 council games.
I think the cage needs to be removed from the show and either Keep it at 9 keys but offer the TR Height on the gate or go back to 7.
After watching these week’s Czech episode and watching them have no attempt on the password even tho they gained 2 clues and 4 scarfices is this the most amount of clues a team has ever had to attempt and fail?
Eric Bosio ’94 had 2 clues and 4 sacrifices. They also guessed wrongly, which is probably worse, and had a player down due to Ratman.
Same result with Les Compagnons de Rackham le Rouge ’91, but the code was arguably more difficult then.

Interestingly enough. France 4 are re showing this year Sesason of Fort Boyard. However they have edited out Asile completely now. In the first episode it was explained by Pere Fouras that the Mummy game would be worth 2 keys. and in the next episode passe muraille had a little game going on for the 8th key.

Ha, that’s actually kind of incredible. I wonder if they filmed a few sequences like that at the time for slotting in in case of issues like that?
They did use the same Sequence in another episode (Both of those episodes didn’t have the team winning a key in the next game).
The one with the prisoner hasn’t been broadcast yet so we don’t know if there a special one for him.
Gonna take a wild stab that Asile isn’t coming back next season. 😛
