I’m a Celeb back November 11th

By | October 31, 2012

I wonder who will be on it this time.

Still, you have to admire the team that does the hardest job in all of television, having to come up with slightly different ways to dress up the same two things night in night out (i.e. eating horrible things or being covered in horrible things) for ten years now.

I always thought it was a bit of a cop out that when Ant and Dec did a Bushtucker Trial for Text Santa last year it was Celebrity Cyclone i.e. the fun one rather than a scary one. Although I suppose Ant did do “Catch a Falling Star” for losing Ant vs Dec once.

Anyway, some excitement over the next few days, it’s the Fort Boyard Halloween Special tonight at 7:45pm UK time on France 2 which promises to be very exciting, and that I’m going to have to watch on catch-up (boo).

And tomorrow, tomorrow, another round of high stakes word game Word Up! begins as your Bother’s Bar Christmas Bonus. Up to £75 to be won! Good luck with that. And The Line Up starring David J Bodycombe and Lewis Murphy should be going out on Sunday evening.

Edit: Also Splash with Tom Daley appaears to be very much a Thing.

Really enjoyed halloween Boyard. The crew did a great job with the staging and it was nice to see so many classic games; either returning or remaining from the summer season. I will be very much trying to persuade my colleagues on CITV that it would be an excellent thing to make.

Speaking of CITV; genuinely excited for the 30th birthday next year; all kinds of things planned.

One of the guys who designs the Bush Tucker Trials was my mentor when I won Pitch Star so I’m sticking up for them. Especially since there is also the ‘dangling somewhere high’, ‘stuck somewhere small’ and ‘subversion of normal situation’ trials to fit in every year!

Ha ha, I’m not knocking the team at all, like I said, having to come up with different ways to dress up the same basic thing must be very difficult. The thing is “dangling somewhere high”, “stuck somewhere small” and “subversion of normal situation” is almost always a subset of “being covered in horrible things”!

Unfortunately the move to shorter games sounded a bit of a death knoll for many games/variations. I can’t imagine seeing the flooded house with the sand code or the fishing net haul in the more recent series; not to mention the tightrope walk which hasn’t been seen in ages.

It’s a bit bemusing because if they did away with the pointless code-boxes on every challenge they wouldn’t need such short games!

I’ve always disliked the codeboxes, they don’t have the same visceral appeal as just grabbing a cannister and are frankly a bit boring. I’m convinced they could come up with a more interesting Boyardesque minigame to dispense cannisters where necessary. The idea I had is based around a sort of railway signalling box, each lever with a different symbol or picture, and then completing the game would reveal which lever to pull to release the cannister. Something like that.

I’m a fairly strong believer that there should be a clear deliniation between key games and adventures, although I did quite like the method of taking a prisoner in The Sewer.

I think after the Percolator this year, I hope next year to see more games with twisted Boyardesque takes on modern life. I’ve already pondered what a Boyardesque take on a vending machine might look like and involve, for example. I think they’d be an entertaining ‘eating unpleasant things’ game to be made from it, not unlike the show had when it first started.

Also, as much as I love fhe show, it doesn’t need to be two hours. It needs to be closer to 90 minutes.

And I am unconvinced it needs the show’s logo in the bottom corner for the entire show.

Although I think we can all agree ‘Hallo… Hallo… Halloween!’ Is the only way to answer a phone on Halloween in future.

Was a good episode. I like what they had done to the fort. It looked amazing. I like the new halloween running music. I also enjoyed the comedic run From Underwater handcuffs to snakes.
Bit disapointed about the rules. They still got the key out of the Sewer but was dissallowed. It would been more fun to see a scarfice for a key.

There’s some interesting C4 news in Broadcast today.

    – Four Rooms is returning in daytime not prime time. 30 episodes, so be interested to see if they can keep up the great casting from previous series.
    – Rory Bremner game Race the Clock has been picked up for a series (also in daytime).
    – Phil Spencer is hosting The Common Denominator.
    – Both those shows are 30 minutes long, which is something of a novelty these days!
    – They’ve announced a new 12 Yard travel game show featuring Brendan “Coach Trip” Sheerin.

      Cheers Paul.

Race the Clock is something I have no idea about. Is this a reworking of Objective’s Absolute Zero they were bandieing about a while ago do you know? I know Rory Bremner was involved in that.

Apparently “contestants have to work out how long to stay in a game where only the audience knows how much time is left on the clock.”

While Race the Clock is being made by Objective (Objective Scotland), a mate of mine produced the pilot of Absolute Zero and, though I don’t know too much about the format of it, from what little I did hear they don’t sound similar. Might be a different thing, or maybe it’s just changed a lot in development.

Also of note, tomorrow’s edition of “Baggage” will be the last on Channel 4 – the final two episodes will go out on E4 opposite “Pointless Celebrities”.

And the teams are confirmed for “Only Connect”‘s Children in Need programme (shown on 12 November). The Goldfingers (Charlie Higson, Daisy Goodwin and Matthew Parris) take on the Fowls (Rosie Boycott, Richard Osman and Clarke Carlisle).

The 12Yard show has got a working title as Brendan’s Magical Mystery Tour. The website is asking for contestants.

Worth pointing out that there will be 8 primetime episodes of Four Rooms as well – so it’s not being entirely kicked back into the wasteland of daytime doomed to shuffle around 5pm for the rest of it’s useful life.

US Millionaire temporarily added a new Lifeline for Halloween week (while renaming the others from a Facebook poll). The new Lifeline is called “Crystal Ball”. It lets contestants see what the value of the question is (which is hidden in the Super Mix format) before answering. Could change your strategy if you want to Jump the question or not. Here’s a look at a really interesting moment from it.
