Show discussion: Schlag den Raab June ’11

By | June 4, 2011

It’s that time again, the time where German television star and Eurovision host Stefan Raab attempts to deny another member of the public his money. Tonight, one million Euro is likely to depend on a game that involves shoving a pencil as far along a desk as possible but without going off the end. Shove Ha’pencil, we used to call it.

The fun starts at 7:15 UK time (that’s 8:15 German time). It is broadcast live on ProSieben, but hopefully there will be some naughty live streaming somewhere.

I’m going to be out for a lot of this evening, but it’s likely to still be running at 10-11pm so.

I’ll be joining from 8pm – normally after when the shortlist of PE teachers and bored late 20-something German office works are skittled down and the sometimes overly long games/challenges start. See you here from then – in the meantime, some music.

    http://youtu.be/nSNqsWNkP-I

The Rabb’s Number 1 hit from the offically licenced local version of Top Of The Pops (sung in 98% in English – and, Parental Guidence note, a word of very strong swareage included)

It’s a curious little tune. Country and Western in style and Raab ‘sings’ in English, but there is a repeated short random vt sample from a German tv show used for the chorus, which is a woman, who sounds exactly how someone with a strong Brummie accent would sound, if speaking German.

One for our germanic friends here. What is she saying, and I’m guessing the clip must turn up on Total TV with regularity for it to be included in Heir Raab’s last solo assult on the german hit parade.

Really? No one? Sort of a shame because I actually won’t be around for much of this one and I was hoping someone could do the play-by-play.

I’ll start, though I’ve got to leave in about 20 minutes. It appears they’re finishing the conntestant selection right now.

Wow, I already really miss Matthias. 🙁 Not that this guy is bad, and not that I’ve seen enough to really give him a fair chance, but it just feels really different without him.

He is Germany’s Glenn Hugill as he hosted their version of The Mole many years ago. Also hosted the 2000 revival of Fort Boyard.

Wow, this game with the pretzel looks really hard!

Game 1 – Die Brezel. Pretzels!
Remove (by whatever means necessary) the middle of a small pretzel, so only the heart-shaped outside remains. Personally, I’d go for the biting method, but they seem to both be trying to use their thumbnails to cut it out.

Tobias wins, with a rather rough pattern. I could do better. 😛

    Tobias 1-0

I’d have wondered if they could suck the pretzel, moisten it up in their mouth, and then the game would be easier.

What can the candidate win on Schlag Den Raab?

    A million Euros…or an ice cream 😀

I do enjoy their competition questions. They must have different regulations reagrding ‘lotteries’ and ‘skill based competitions’.

Oh, interesting, the first commercial in this break was for “17 Meter”, the German 19 Yards.

Interesting trailer for their version of the Whole 19 Yards, there. Only the Germans would be anal enough to call it “17 Metres”! It doesn’t even refer to the original phrase any more!

      1. art begotti

You know what I loved about this clip? the fact that it appears that in one round, a buzzer is 17 meters up. At least, that’s what I’m assuming, with the clip of the guy stacking the tall boxes and shoving them at the ceiling.

I fail to see the ‘speed’ part. It’s just like normal badminton but with no net, and the shuttlecock has to be within the square mat the opponent is standing on to earn a point.

        1. ss

Yeah, it’s more like long-distance badminton, but that’s not sexy probably…

          1. Andy "Kesh" Sullivan

Call it crazy, but when I saw the name ‘Speed Badminton’, I thought it would involve the players rallying with themselves, hitting the shuttlecock, then running after it to the other mat to return it. The player that keeps the longest rally wins.

It’s quite fun trying to work out the questions to these!

The sizes of sports courts was a good one. I didn’t realise a US football pitch is smaller than our football pitches, although when you think about it (100yds etc.) it makes sense. You just wouldn’t imagine anything in America being smaller than the UK.

  25. Andy "Kesh" Sullivan

A fierce tug of war battle in Sortieren ends with Stefan slipping up on sorting world leaders into age order.

      Game 11 – Spaghetti!

Stefan and Tobias must place one hand on the table, on top of which is a piece of spaghetti. When the buzzer sounds, they must both grab the spaghetti, and whoever has the larger piece (measured by a black mark in the exact centre of the spaghetti) gets a point.

And Tobias just gained a point for hitting the nail all the way into the stump.

    2. David B

The person who knocks in the nail flush against the wood wins.

There appears to be a limit of 11(?) moves, so if you started the game you are obliged to ‘go for it’ on move 11. This is the significance of the hammer icon, I think.

      Reply
    3. David

I think they have to move the nail at least a little bit on each turn.

Not in this version – on one move the contender actually missed completely.

I think whoever starts (has the hammer icon next to their name) has to hit the nail all the way in within 11 hits.

I remember this game. They draw cards alternately, and this creates a list of items. They must then recall the full list each time.

      Reply
    1. David B

So do these cards have objects on them? Or do you have to remember an increasingly long list of playing cards?

Doh, how can you miss the first object? He was rushing that. You could see Stefan had the right idea – use the time available to strengthen the links between the items in the list.

I’ve considered a Schlag den Brig competition before, but it’s so difficult having to base everything on trust when the internet is involved, especially if money is involved also.

          2. Brig Bother Post author

When I used to host games of IRC Weakest Link, it was fine as long as there was a strict time limit to answer each question. Some sort of live chat might be the way to go, but you can’t do a memory game using it.
