It’s that time again, the time where German television star and Eurovision host Stefan Raab attempts to deny another member of the public his money. Tonight, one million Euro is likely to depend on a game that involves shoving a pencil as far along a desk as possible but without going off the end. Shove Ha’pencil, we used to call it.
The fun starts at 7:15 UK time (that’s 8:15 German time). It is broadcast live on ProSieben, but hopefully there will be some naughty live streaming somewhere.
I’m going to be out for a lot of this evening, but it’s likely to still be running at 10-11pm so.
I’ll be joining from 8pm – normally after when the shortlist of PE teachers and bored late 20-something German office works are skittled down and the sometimes overly long games/challenges start. See you here from then – in the meantime, some music.

The Rabb’s Number 1 hit from the offically licenced local version of Top Of The Pops (sung in 98% in English – and, Parental Guidence note, a word of very strong swareage included)
It’s a curious little tune. Country and Western in style and Raab ‘sings’ in English, but there is a repeated short random vt sample from a German tv show used for the chorus, which is a woman, who sounds exactly how someone with a strong Brummie accent would sound, if speaking German.
One for our germanic friends here. What is she saying, and I’m guessing the clip must turn up on Total TV with regularity for it to be included in Heir Raab’s last solo assult on the german hit parade.
Really? No one? Sort of a shame because I actually won’t be around for much of this one and I was hoping someone could do the play-by-play.
I’ll start, though I’ve got to leave in about 20 minutes. It appears they’re finishing the conntestant selection right now.

Tobias will be playing.
Matthias Opdenhövel went to ARD btw, so there’s a new presenter
Wow, I already really miss Matthias. 🙁 Not that this guy is bad, and not that I’ve seen enough to really give him a fair chance, but it just feels really different without him.
He is Germany’s Glenn Hugill as he hosted their version of The Mole many years ago. Also hosted the 2000 revival of Fort Boyard.
get the the middle from a pretzel without breaking the outside (or something)
Wow, this game with the pretzel looks really hard!
Game 1 – Die Brezel. Pretzels!
Remove (by whatever means necessary) the middle of a small pretzel, so only the heart-shaped outside remains. Personally, I’d go for the biting method, but they seem to both be trying to use their thumbnails to cut it out.
Tobias wins, with a rather rough pattern. I could do better. 😛
Tobias 1-0
I’d have wondered if they could suck the pretzel, moisten it up in their mouth, and then the game would be easier.
OK, so that seemed simpler in theory
1-0 Tobias
Game 2 – Stimmt’s?
Steven Gätjen (new presenter) did this btw:
Fort Boyard (2001-2002) – Moderation
I always get an unjustified rush of schadenfreude when I get a question on an American TV show right and they both miss.
Tobias takes Game 2 with 2 crosses to Stefan’s 4.
Tobias 3 – 0 Stefan
Tobias wins 4-2.
3-0 Tobias… but Stefan can tie it in this next game!
Game 3 – Speed-Badminton.
And I’m gone. Later, folks!
As always, a humorous competition question.
What can the candidate win on Schlag Den Raab?
A million Euros…or an ice cream 😀
I do enjoy their competition questions. They must have different regulations reagrding ‘lotteries’ and ‘skill based competitions’.
Oh, interesting, the first commercial in this break was for “17 Meter”, the German 19 Yards.
Interesting trailer for their version of the Whole 19 Yards, there. Only the Germans would be anal enough to call it “17 Metres”! It doesn’t even refer to the original phrase any more!
Austria used 17 Meters too..
http://youtu.be/tIdhHHSzJqQ
You know what I loved about this clip? the fact that it appears that in one round, a buzzer is 17 meters up. At least, that’s what I’m assuming, with the clip of the guy stacking the tall boxes and shoving them at the ceiling.
OK speedbadminton
It’s barely understandable
There’s no net for example
I fail to see the ‘speed’ part. It’s just like normal badminton but with no net, and the shuttlecock has to be within the square mat the opponent is standing on to earn a point.
Yeah, it’s more like long-distance badminton, but that’s not sexy probably…
Call it crazy, but when I saw the name ‘Speed Badminton’, I thought it would involve the players rallying with themselves, hitting the shuttlecock, then running after it to the other mat to return it. The player that keeps the longest rally wins.
…they should try that once
Ooh! On October 8th, it’s the Stock Car Crash Challenge 2011. Should be fun.
Stefan won game three
3-3
4: Blamieren oder Kassieren
Stefan wins 7-2
Tobias 3 – 7 Stefan
German commercials are SO much better than ours! 😀
This game, Kugel-labyrinth, is very Crystal-Maze-esque!
Yeah, I agree. The TCM one used concentric circles, this one looks so much more difficult.
I’m assuming there’s a penalty for putting the ball in a hole – and also the platform they’re standing on it swivels – adding +2 difficulty 😀
Stefan manages a time of 2:50.18
Tobias manages a time of 1:41.37
Tobias ties the game 7-7
I can’t count.
It’s Tobias 8 – 7 Stefan
Game 6 – Lippenlesen.
I can only assume it involves reading the lips as they say a phrase and then reciting it.
Stefan wins it 5-1
Tobias 8 – 13 Stefan
Game 7 – Fussball-Golf
ok so stefan is crap at this
What’s his handicap at Football Golf? His left foot!
Wow, what a horror show here from Stefan! 😀
Great game idea, though. Shame it wasn’t more exciting.
I think after the first couple of shots went out of bounds, Stephan should have tried to do a softer shot- it wouldn’t have gone as far, but at least it would have been in play..
Tobias wins with 8 strokes over Stefan’s 23!!! 😀
Tobias 15 – 13 Stefan
Game 8 – Cross Skating
Presumably this’ll be Devil Catch the Hindmost – keep going until you’re tagged?
Stefan started strong, but fatigue set in and Tobias managed to catch up to take the win. Plus we got to see Stefan fall on his arse! 😀
Tobias 23 – 13 Stefan
Game 9 – After the break
Great to know the Germans get the benefit of Hannah Spearitt too.
And we’re back, and ready for Game 9 which is…Gorodki
Wikipedia page ahoy! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorodki
Anyone got any idea how the scoring works on this game? Stefan got 1, Tobias got 4 but they scored 0 and 3 respectively?
Cancel that, I reckon it’s points for any pins knocked clear of the marked square.
Tobias took an early lead in the first 2 rounds 6-0, but Stefan got the hang of the game quickly to turn it around and win 7-6
Tobias 23 – 22 Stefan
Game 10 – Sortieren
Ooh, nice game. Notepad on standby for sequence questions…
Looks like it’s a firm favourite as they already played it before. I think it was on the last show or the one before.
Wow, this one’s going right down to the wire, 4 each
It’s quite fun trying to work out the questions to these!
The sizes of sports courts was a good one. I didn’t realise a US football pitch is smaller than our football pitches, although when you think about it (100yds etc.) it makes sense. You just wouldn’t imagine anything in America being smaller than the UK.
A fierce tug of war battle in Sortieren ends with Stefan slipping up on sorting world leaders into age order.
Tobias 33 – 22 Stefan, but there’s still plenty of points to be gained
Game 11 after the break
Game 11 – Spaghetti!
Stefan and Tobias must place one hand on the table, on top of which is a piece of spaghetti. When the buzzer sounds, they must both grab the spaghetti, and whoever has the larger piece (measured by a black mark in the exact centre of the spaghetti) gets a point.
This game would be a lot more fun to watch if my streaming didn’t decide to freeze every few seconds all of a sudden.
I’m getting the same, it always seems to lock up when the buzzer sounds.
Ah, glad it’s not just me then.
and Tobias cut himself on the table grabbing…
And Stefan has too now!
And Stefan’s cut himself too! What’s the table made out of, obsidian? 😀
The solution? Put tape around all the edges.
Tobias has to win any 2 of the last 4 to win- but Stefan can win by getting the next three in a row..
Another game down to the wire, but Tobias wins 5-4
Tobias 44 – 22 Stefan
Tobias can win this in 2 games
Game 12 – Wo Liegt Was?
Stefan takes it
Tobias 44 – 34 Stefan
Could this be a comeback?
Game 13 – Nagel-Duell
Thanks chaps, just got in.
Welcome back, Brig. Close game, this one. I think it could go all the way to Game 15.
This is That Game From Fort Boyard.
I really can’t work this game out!
All I can work out is if you miss, your opponent gets a point, if you get the 11th hit, maybe you gain a point? Not sure
And Tobias just gained a point for hitting the nail all the way into the stump.
The person who knocks in the nail flush against the wood wins.
There appears to be a limit of 11(?) moves, so if you started the game you are obliged to ‘go for it’ on move 11. This is the significance of the hammer icon, I think.
I think they have to move the nail at least a little bit on each turn.
Not in this version – on one move the contender actually missed completely.
Christ, Stepehn Gaijin looked about 12 when he did Fort Boyard.
I think whoever starts (has the hammer icon next to their name) has to hit the nail all the way in within 11 hits.
This would be a lot better if they didn’t have to slip on the Wii Remote straps in between hits, or if they just had the foresight to use two hammers.
And now advantage Stefan- he only needs to win one of the last two to win..
I think the pressure’s getting to Stefan, but he ‘nails’ it 😀
Tobias 44 – 47 Stefan
MATCHBALL for Stefan
Game 14 – Koffer Packen
I remember this game. They draw cards alternately, and this creates a list of items. They must then recall the full list each time.
Wikipedia ahoy!
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koffer_Packen
So do these cards have objects on them? Or do you have to remember an increasingly long list of playing cards?
It’s I Packed My Bag!
No, the cards have names of household items on them
The time limit increased by five seconds each go as well.
Tobias misses the Kleiderstander, giving Stefan the victory.
Doh, how can you miss the first object? He was rushing that. You could see Stefan had the right idea – use the time available to strengthen the links between the items in the list.
Good game, good game!
Blimey, that was abrupt.
That’s all the Schlag den Raab until 10th September.
My birthday! How lovely. Start saving now, punters!
SCHLAG DEN BODYCOMBE SPECIAL.
Oh, that would be interesting. How could we do an internet version?
I’ve considered a Schlag den Brig competition before, but it’s so difficult having to base everything on trust when the internet is involved, especially if money is involved also.
When I used to host games of IRC Weakest Link, it was fine as long as there was a strict time limit to answer each question. Some sort of live chat might be the way to go, but you can’t do a memory game using it.
