Show discussion: The Million Pound Drop ep 2 onwards

By | May 25, 2010

It might be worth starting a new post for the second episode as the one for episode one got quite big. So here you go.

Edit: Well, this feels like a slightly better show this evening.

It looks like Endemol is not taking it on the chin regarding honest reviews. Although what has been mentioned here and on Digital Spy, it seems there aren’t many negative comments on the Facebook page. Some are saying their posts are being deleted by the moderators.

Endemol deleting negative criticism from their sites………. why does that seem vaguely familiar (Big Brother.. lack of live steam.. cough.. cough…)

On Twitter, one of the pages linked to Endemol were saying the producers were making ‘tweaks’ tonight.

They opened two trap doors at once which is a good idea. Makes the show faster!

Ooh, the two incorrect ones they didn’t put money on dropped at once. Halfway there, Endemol.

    1. Alex

Actually, dropping all three wrong ones at once would be pretty tensionless, which wouldn’t work. My mistake.

Well there’s the first tweak – more than one door opening.

Drat, Joe and Alex beat me by milliseconds.

Notice they’ve also made changes to what’s displayed on the door screens after the doors open.

Well Justine Henin and Serena Williams definitely aren’t Russian, are they??!!?

Also the obvious-wrong-answer shouldn’t be in this far. First one maybe, not after that.

*Sigh* Wish we Americans could watch… Oh well, at least we have the online game.

Wait, while this two-drop thing works, surely they’ll mix it up with the one-drop? Because if they only use that like that for eliminations…

Ooo0h… they stopped the clock because the players were absolutely sure. That’s a good implementation!

Just thinking that myself. Good on Endemol for not wasting time when they’re so confident as well! Maybe we’ll get more than 8 questions tonight..?

Well definitely not Paris Hilton or Kerry Katona…

I am liking this a lot more than the first ep.

If the first ep was a 4/10, this is now a 7. Could be a brilliant turn-around if they keep this up.

Hopefully they’ll keep some sense of tension in this one by eliminating the two non-geordies quickly… These two seem very interesting players – much better than the girls yesterday.

Apart from comparethemarket.com, PG Tips and Travelodge most of them are inferior to the US.

I’d bet that the selection process will be the same with 24 Hour Quiz and nobody over 40 will get on the show.

Would be nice to be proved wrong though.

The crowd are more involved tonight, they’re cheering more and giving more support. I think that’s good as it adds a bit of atmosphere to the show.

Yeah I’m playing online. It’s quite good! I still have all my money left from these guys questions.

It looks like they are taking my advice (and no doubt, others) into account by cutting the tension time for the early questions.

75,000 pounds left after five questions. I’m rather pitiful. ^_^

I’m sure they are taking the advice from this site as Brig already mentioned he is being emailed official stuff, plus we are the experts unlike the regular viewer.

25,000… I’ve got to get this right or I’m screwed. Leaning towards Pisa, but…

Have to admit I liked Davina’s performance just there.

“Just make your mind up!!! OK, I’m going to toss a coin, I’ve got a coin right here…”

      Followed soon after by:

(Davina looks to camera as if to announce a break)
      Dan: “Get on with it!”
Davina: “Oh, I’m so sorry, we’re going to find out in a few minutes…”

Didn’t know the Sydney Opera House is nine metres taller than the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Another change – Davina isn’t counting the money now.

A million times better tonight. Have to admit, that I got caught out by the euro and David Blaine questions too tonight.

By my reckoning, if you can survive the first 3 questions with £600k intact, then by hedging your bets, as long as you put some money on the right answer, you would get to the final question with £25k left.

  37. David

If you have £400,000 left after 4 questions, so long as you can eliminate one of the three answers, you can evenly divide the money among two answers each time and still have 1 packet left for question 9.

I don’t believe there is a question 9, I think I interpreted Davina’s interview statement wrong, it looks like Q8 is the fifty-fifty.

A MUCH better show than Monday, well done Endemol for tweaking it.

Pacing is good now, I think the main thing that remains is to show that the game can be won. To me it just feels uber hard and that no-one will win anything.

I think it also helped having a crowd that seemed to be into the game – it brought a better atmosphere to the game.

A solid B+ from me now

Apparently its audience held up rather well in the overnights according to DS, although I hope Jellybean can furnish us with better details at some point.

Hi sorry been in meetings all day. Last night held the ratings of the previous night with an average of 1.9m again at 11% of the share. It also started again at 2.1 but finished at 1.4 so it can no longer be known as The Million Viewer Drop unfortunately.

Not sure where digital spy get their ratings but I get a minute by minute break down from BARB. Perhaps they are reffering to the peak which WAS 2.2. However this was directly after both ITV and BBC news finished and accounts for people switching over to see what’s on. Just afterwards it drops back down to 1.8.

Interesting changes to the production flaws in the first episode, huh?

Thanks for the ratings info, JB. I don’t know where they get it from either.

I don’t quite get the idea that these shows have run throughs and pilots, but nobody seems to spot the really obvious things viewers are going to complain about. It’s a bit of a surprise the show held as well as it did given the first night really.

        Endemol I’m cheap! Call me!

A large portion of the problem is that development and production usually have very little to do with each other. Things like having the money appear on the incorrect answer screen rather than have Davina count it, or being able to lock in an answer before the time is up are all production decisions. It’s likely that development produce all the run throughs and pilots and then production take over the series, changing small details which have the inevitable consequances of creating other flaws.

Even if Endemol took you on, it would be in a development capacity, so you would have little to no affect on small production details which cause Bar complaints once the series airs on television.

To seperate production from development like that is madness. How hard would it be to have one of the development team sit in on a meeting or a pilot?

Good productions accept ideas from runners to series producers and all levels inbetween.

On the Crystal Maze, they had a problem when the contestants were finding picking up the gold tokens too easily. It was the floor manager that came up with the idea of the silver tokens.

Agree again with the consensus here – though bringing out the two at the end seems a bit pointless – though technically for the next 23 hours they are millionaires! Just need to tidy up the putting the money back element – perhaps a short VT introducing contestants would be a good cover for that.

2.08m last night, down from 2.2m on Monday – so not bad at all. Will probably go sub-2m tonight though I’d imagine, but if it holds above 1.5m by the end of the week for the (awful) slot that it’s in C4 really can’t expect any more.

If it does return and returns in the live format I’d imagine January would be the obvious contender, replacing Celebrity Big Brother.
